Galaxy S4 features the Android Download Mode which is a sub-system of your device that can used to flash stock firmware files or any other type of customization file. In this post you will find instructions on how you can easily boot the Download Mode for your smartphone.

Samsung devices are using the Download Mode for their devices instead of the Fasboot / Bootloader mode that is being used by HTC and Nexus devices. Entering Download mode using Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the easiest tasks that an Android user has to complete, as you simply press several buttons at the same time and power on the smartphone. Below you can find different methods that you can use to boot into Download Mode on stock and rooted devices.

Download Mode for Samsung devices allows you to install new OTA Updates by pushing them from your computer directly to your phone using only a data cable.

Also, for your computer to work with the Download Mode you will need to have the ODIN software present. Below you can find the download links for Odin 1.85, Odin 3.04 and Odin 3.07 programs. All these programs are working with various Samsung devices and you will find the correct variants in tutorial guides. Odin download links are listed at the end of this post after the tutorials on how to boot into Download Mode with Samsung phones.

Usually, the Stock and Rooted Samsung Galaxy S4 phones can be booted in Download Mode the same way. However, in both cases, you are forced to power off the device completely and then use a button combination to load the required files. This can be easily changed if your phone is rooted.

Now, if your phone is running on stock and official Android firmware, then you can easily boot into Download Mode like this:

  • Power off the phone completely by removing its battery for 5 seconds.
  • Re-insert the battery back into its place.
  • Press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power buttons, all at the same time.
  • Release the buttons only when the 'Warning!!' message appears.
  • Next, press Volume Up button to confirm that you wish to enter Download Mode.
  • Your device will now show a green Android with the 'Downloading.. Do not turn off target' text listed under it.
  • That's it, now you can connect your device with your PC after you launch ODIN.

Since you've now booted into Download Mode you can easily start transferring files or flash new Android operating system files. Note that the instructions above will work with both rooted and stock Samsung Galaxy S4 phones.

Samsung Galaxy S4 devices that are running on various custom ROMs can be booted into Download Mode right from their home screens. Select reboot and then 'Download' option for that to work. If your device doesn't show that menu, then you can use the info below and learn how to add it.

If your phone is rooted, you can choose to use an alternative method to boot into Android Download Mode with your Samsung device. You will be able to load all the required files directly from your phone's home screen using the Power button and then tapping several times the phone's display.

You have to download and install several modding files on your device using the custom Recovery mode. So, use the instructions below only if you're rooting and running a custom Recovery on it. Here's what you need to do.

  • Download the file corresponding to your version of Galaxy S4 using the links below:

  • Copy the files onto your phone's internal SDcard.
  • Boot your device into Recovery mode by pressing Volume Up, Home and Power all at the same time. Obviously, before doing this the phone has to be switched off.
  • Clear Cache and Dalvik Cache from Advanced settings menu.
  • Create a NANDROID backup using 'backup and restore' section.
  • Select 'install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from sdcard'.
  • Find the file you moved before entering Recovery and install it.
  • Reboot system.

The device will now restart and the changes should've been applied successfully. To boot into Download mode, you will simply need to press Power button until 'Device Options' screen appears. Select 'reboot' and then tap 'Download' option and press OK. You Galaxy S4 will now restart into Android Download Mode.

These were all the step that you had to take in order to learn how to load the Download Mode files. Remember to download ODIN program and then you will be able to flash new custom files using Download Mode.

Dvd decoder app. Extract the contents of all zip files and save them into a single folder on your computer. Launch ODIN exe on your PC, then boot the phone into Download Mode and connect the device to PC using the USB data cable.

I get into downloading mode, but it's stuck there. After i get into Downloading 'Do not turn off target!!', what am I supposed to do? I tried plugging in my USB cable but the computer doesn't recognize the device. Do I need to install this ODIN software? I do not have debugging enabled..

Trying to get pictures off a phone that's locked because my friend got drunk, changed the passcode, and can't remember it.
